Why There Is A Need For This:
If they miss the fundamentals taught in their college core STEM courses’ 1st month (during which students often are distracted by the transition into college), students rarely can catch up. STEM courses are mercilessly cumulative. (ie, Before they learn “C”, they must have learned “B”. And before they learn “B”, they must have learned “A”). So that by the time STEM midterms are near, college students who never really understood their STEM courses’ fundamentals are lost.
I (Dan Jetter, founder of EEF and OnCallTutor) have seen this every year in my tutoring. But as a teacher in struggling urban public high schools, I also saw that several of my financially-poor students were also exceptionally motivated. Via its STEM Tutoring Summer Bridge, EEF can help such students help themselves so that they'll hit the ground running when they enter their college STEM core courses.
