course Outline: Tutor-guided independent study

EEF's MCAT Prep approach is mainly to support the independent study (ie, studying course textbook AND trying to solve lots of problems) that the student does over the week between sessions, rather than attempting to cram sufficient lessons into the weekly sessions. More specifically:

  1. Study independently - Student uses free resources and attempts assigned problems.

  2. Mark mistakes - Student annotates problems and sends work before the session.

  3. Re-solve and learn with tutor - Tutor guides reasoning and reviews concepts in context.

  4. Plan next week - Student leaves with targeted practice and mistake-based flashcards.

Thus, most of each session is spent reviewing the HW problems (assigned last session, discrete and/or passage) that the student has had difficulty answering. We don’t waste the student’s time reviewing problems that he/she understands. Nor do we review problems that the student has not grittily tried to figure out himself/herself. We review problems that the student has completed Steps 1thru2 above.

In Summary

  • In each session, the tutor guides the student through the student’s re-solving of practice problems that the student found difficult during his/her independent study over the week since the last session. Relevant concepts and test-taking strategies are reviewed in the context of this problem re-solving. Thus, sessions are both efficient and effective.

  • The Most Frequently Tutored MCAT Subjects Are the Following:

    • General Chemistry and/or Physics

    • CARS

    • Math (relevant mini-lessons given as necessary during the solving of MCAT problems)

    • Test-Taking Strategies
